Lethargy

You don’t merely feel tired or exhausted but you feel even worse.
You feel drained.
As if every inch of energy/life has been sucked away from you.
Sucked away, by “life” itself.

You feel as though there must be something more, something else that will make this reality worth living again. Something that will make Trying– actually worth it.

You feel bored with what you do on a daily basis. The monotony has caused you to become so good at that low-level job that you can do it with your eyes closed and your hands tied behind your back. So now, you’re stuck in a low-paying and unchallenging situation for more than half of your day. But you’re still determined, still aware that you can change your life at any given time- given the energy.

Energy from where? You get back to the home that you have decided will be your temporary night-office but as you rest your buttocks upon that tiny office chair- you fade away into “lala land”. Where everything is great, abundant and most of all: everything makes a little bit more sense than the real world. It makes so much sense, actually, that by the time you rise: you can not even remember the utopia that you have just woken-up from.

The concept of this utopia- is that foreign. So foreign that it can not be comprehended within the confines of reality. By the time you’ve awakened for the next day, you’ve left your dreams “where they belong” and you’re back into your own self-proclaimed living hell.

Many of us find ourselves living this life, not completely out of choice but out of neglect. Neglect of the nurturing that is required to cultivate our every dream and aspiration. There is a certain level of obsession that one must have. Not an obsession of the dream, that’s probably already there. But an obsession of realizing that dream, a keen want/need to do more; to “suffer” more and to WANT to see more. Make the dream your every-second-reality. When you’re not thinking of your family- you’re thinking of your dream. When you are thinking about your family, you’re thinking about them in the context of your dream. It’s so hard to stress the notion of the importance of affirmations in a world that seems locked into “reaction mode” and distanced from “action mode“.

A world where you just keep on keeping-on. Flowing with the current.
As a creator; it is your responsibility to go against the flow of mediocrity.

So keep raking the leaves, pruning the flowers and watering the soil of your potentially wonderful thought-garden and be sure to nurture your dream to reality.

The Discomfort Zone

You know that dream when you’re buck naked at school? It’s terrifying, isn’t it? Everything’s unsheltered, out in the open, nude—a nakedness we’re thankful to wake from and ease back into our world of comfort and safety.

You see, we often feel an underlying trepidation whenever we do something new, something that makes us feel exposed.

Joshua notices this trepidation with his writing students whenever he ask them to do activities that’re outside their comfort zone: when he asks them to tell a stranger about their passion for writing, or when he asks them to write an essay or story that other classmates might read.

Likewise, when Ryan asks the people he mentors to publicly proclaim their goals or to find an accountability partner, these mentees often wince with foreboding. At first, at least…

We refer to this uneasy consternation as “stepping into your Discomfort Zone.” That is, we want these people—people we truly care about—to feel temporarily naked. Because when you’re naked, you’re most vulnerable. And when you’re vulnerable, that’s when radical growth happens.

So next time you feel naked, next time you feel defenseless, know that you’re simply operating from your Discomfort Zone, a place from which you’ll experience growth as long as you’re willing to sit with your vulnerability long enough to grow.

When passion turns into work and then to pleasure (and then some).

If you’ve been following Project ZooLoo for long enough, you would have heard me mention the whole idea of chasing your passions quite often. So let’s say that you’ve done this and have managed to start your own business revolving around this passion. You then set-up a workspace at home and start realizing this vision/dream that you have. The only way that this dream can be actualized is through some hard work and determination. Yes, work.

That’s the place I found myself in not so long ago. I had found out what I was very passionate about and I had drawn up a plan- a comprehensive plan– that I was to follow in order to achieve all that I had set out to achieve. Now, I had to put that plan into action- that required Work. For those of you who are anything like myself, the concept of Work has always been one that is preceded by a long sigh of discontent. This feeling is formed through habit and experience. All our lives, we are being told to work on this and that and as we all know:  doing something merely because you have no other reasonable alternative- sucks! This spawns from all those meaningless school lessons that basically equipped us with the knowledge and skills to become great employees. I never liked this about school. As a result, I associated “Work” with monotony, tediousness, fatigue and boredom. In order for me to get things done, This had to change.

I decided to then alter my work experience and tailor make this concept of “work” to suit my personality and my idiosyncrasies alike. I’m a vegetarian health and fitness fanatic, I love moving, I love feeling great and I enjoy exercise. All it took for me to modify my experience: was setting-up my Standing Desk; pumping up the volume and feeling joyful as I move energetically whilst typing away at the laptop- a task which, before this decision, grew mundane overtime and sometimes even sparked up some unwanted/unwarranted fatigue.

This “modification” has been keeping me alive throughout my work experience. Work has taken a turn from being tedious or “an effort” to just a series of effortless actions made to keep me energised and keep me on the path to my success.

Maybe you should try it too? Modify your work-experience to better suit your definition of pleasure.

Money Does Not Buy Better Habits

I’m not adverse to earning money. That would be silly. I am, however, much more concerned with outcome than income.

A common mistake we tend to make is that we often assign money as our primary driver of happiness. That is, If I make $X, then I’ll be happy.

Once this happens though—i.e., once we earn $X—we quickly discover that the equation is broken. There is, after all, a reason why most lottery winners end up broke: bad habits. Besides, there are plenty of miserable millionaires and countless happy poor folks.

A much better conductor of individual contentment, then, has little to do with money: our daily habits. Said another way, the outcome of better habits is more rewarding than your income will ever be.

You see, we have a much better chance of radically improving our happiness by just changing our habits—by forming new, empowering daily rituals. And we needn’t earn exorbitant amounts of cash to do so.

High income or no, we must simply avoid passivity in favor of active, engaged, deliberate tasks. We must acknowledge our mistakes, make the right direction-changing decisions, and then take incremental actions each day. Over time, as we move farther in the right direction, we’ll be able to wave at our bad habits in the rearview, happy and content, driving toward a more meaningful horizon.

This is all, of course, not as easy as it sounds. But, then again, it’s simpler than you may think.
